Formerly known as Dutterrers, Heartland Home Foods has been in business since 1939. They have accumulated a customer base of over 20,000, making them the largest all-natural in-home food provider in the Mid-Atlantic. What they do is very simple. They provide the finest five-star restaurant quality all-natural meats, certified organic vegetables, and brand name groceries available. You can’t get meats like they carry at the grocery store or local butcher shop. Not to mention the free delivery. And all for what you're probably already spending at the grocery store. They also back every item with a 100% unconditional guarantee. Seriously. If you order a box of chicken breasts, try them and don't like them, they'll take the remaining ones back and replace them. Talk about a low risk situation.
The packaging is a factor, too. First, it's very convenient to have it in separate single-serving portion sizes. You can choose by appetite size, too. For instance, I decided steak would be good for dinner. We have a range of tummy sizes, and there's usually a lot of guesswork involved. But thanks to the preportioned selection, I can pick single packs of the perfect cut. For example:
I can pick out a nice 12 ounce ribeye for my husband, 6 ounce filets for me and my daughter, and the perfect little-one-size 3 ounce medallions for the youngest ones. No waste, no fuss, and they even thaw super-fast. One of my worst habits is "Oh, no, forgot to take something out of the freezer", so this is a huge help.
My other worst habit is also solved by the excellent packaging. When I do remember to take something out of the freezer, I sometimes take out too much, and don't get to it right away. In my experience, after two days, you're pretty much doomed to toss it. I was told that because of the way it's sealed up, it lasts longer even when thawed. So I decided to test that by leaving a pack of fajita beef in the fridge, starting out frozen, for four days.
Usually, this means gross-looking grey meat, even if it doesn't necessarily go bad. This is what I had instead. This picture isn't touched up in any way.
Other than some faint greyness on the edges, it was still very red, and it smelled and tasted perfectly fresh. So now I'm covered on both of my bad habits.
But what of the beef ? Well, it comes from Creekstone Farms, described as "unique to the beef industry because it combines superior Black Angus
genetics, exceptional cattle management practices, carefully controlled
high-quality feeding and state-of-the-art processing of only
genetically verified Black Angus cattle" on their website.
I know what you're thinking. That's lovely, but does it taste good?
O. M. G. Does it ever.
Just a little salt and pepper to enhance the natural flavors of the meat, and you have a serious meat thrill on your hands. The cuts are all VERY tender...the medallions actually come apart when you cut, even cooked medium rare, as I prefer. It's the same quality as you'd get in a high end steakhouse.
A final note: the common opinion is that small changes don't make a difference. Since I've been eating these products, despite my still having "naughty" food and drink on occasion, I have noticed how much better I feel. In fact, when we get takeout now is the only time I revisit my old digestive issues. I am even losing my cravings for a lot of the "bad" foods, and favoring the good.
There's something to this clean eating deal, and it doesn't mean you have to give up all of your vices...even a small change can improve your health. Food for thought. Literally.

I received products for testing and review purposes. My opinions are my own. Heartland Home Foods erves the entire Washington/Baltimore Markets and extended suburbs from Northern Virginia through Southern Pennsylvania.
